2022's Rut Report is and has been up and running, check the drop down menu on the top right of this page!

06 February 2022
Never quit! Client killed an absolute stud this afternoon. Last day of the season! Late season food source, remember that next year.

03 January 2022
It has finally happened, Ohio is getting cold! Setup between bedding and food in the evening. Do not setup over food unless you have a bullet proof exit strategy. Some bucks are shedding already and some younger buckers are in bachelor groups again. If you have a tag left, the time to fill it is between now and muzzleloader season, good luck!

08 December 2021
Scrapes are opening back up again, bucks are fighting again, and does are being bumped-mostly under the cover of darkness. It is starting to ramp up again, right on cue (a month after peak rut). The week directly after gun season is a tough one, a lot of deer are nocturnal and about the time they will start showing in daylight again Ohio has gun season part two next weekend. Good luck if you are still after him!

30 November 2021
There was a good chance you seen snow on the ground on your way to work this morning. I say on your way to work because it does not seem like many trucks are out today. Two decades ago there would have been deer running everywhere; the orange army deer drives would have everything moving. Now they know they are being hunted, but they are not being pushed-this leads to them not moving much. Good luck if you still have a tag!

24 November 2021
Daylight seeking is still happening, not as much as two weeks ago though. Un-bred does could be coming back in at anytime. If you still have a tag, good luck. Happy Thanksgiving.

19 November 2021
It is slowing down, but remember what he is thinking: "There is a hot doe somewhere." He is eventually going to go looking again. Don't worry if the buck you were after disappeared. If you keep dwelling that someone else put an arrow in him, it will get in your head and you will start fidgeting or playing on your phone and you will never know he busted you. Good luck to all the little people and their parents this weekend!

17 November 2021
Mature bucks are still on the move, hitting scrapes again. Tomorrow's cold front is going to move through at the perfect time. Tomorrow may be the best all day sit seen so far. If you have to pick morning or afternoon, be in the stand right as it stops raining. It moves through most of Ohio around noon, then it is cloudy and dreary-perfect conditions! Good luck!

15 November 2021
It is still happening! Hunt choke points between doe bedding areas. Once he gets done with one doe, he is on the move to find another one. Midday sightings of mature bucks will go up this week, be ready and good luck.

11 November 2021
Mature bucks are chasing not just checking. If you are on the SE side of Ohio be in the stand, once the rain and front passes they are all going to be on their feet. Same thing I said a couple days ago, they can only breed for a few weeks out of the year, he doesn't care if he is getting rained on either. Have a great Veterans Day!

09 November 2021
It is happening right now. Do not let the weather keep you on the couch, he gets to breed does for a few weeks out of the year, do you think he cares if it is 65 degrees and sunny out? Cold front is coming in a few days, check a previous update to see how that will affect your hunt. Good luck!

05 November 2021
This is the weekend I expect to get the most harvest pictures from my clients. If you have been hunting and are not seeing deer, you have a problem. Buck movement could happen at any point, all day sits are advised. Good luck!

03 November 2021
Bucks are starting to throw caution to the wind, be in a stand. If you see your target buck moving away from you out of bow range, don't leave the stand. Stay put, there is a good chance he will end up near you. They do not aimlessly wander, they are searching for hot does, if he doesn't find one he will most likely canvas/grid search the area, maybe giving you a shot opportunity.

01 November 2021
The first week of November is here! Bucks you have not seen before should be showing up now. More does are coming into estrus now, than in the two weeks prior. I am sure you looked at the weather, but if you haven't the outlook looks great. A client told me today that they are only getting pictures of bucks at night right now and it is not worth it to hunt, I told them "they are all night pictures until they are not", meaning you may only get one chance at the one you are after in daylight, you better be in the woods.

28 October 2021
Mature bucks have been seen and killed on their feet over the last few days. Night time mature buck pics have ramped up in some locations but not all. This year chasing is going to happen with a flip of a switch, be ready for it to really heat up this weekend. If you are in the group that is not getting new buck pictures yet there are a few reasons: There is still a lot of corn that has not been picked throughout the region and acorn production was spotty this year. This in turn congregates doe groups, at either corn fields or oaks that produced acorns. Which leads to bucks not needing to move large distances to find multiple doe groups to check.

22 October 2021
Young bucks have been moving all day today. This evening will be a good night if it stays overcast.

16 October 2021
A cold front pushed through Ohio between 8am and 1pm. If you were on the west side of Ohio you seen more movement at daylight. If you were in central Ohio the movement was around 10-11am. If you were in southeast Ohio, you did not notice anything-they moved like normal during the evening. This cold front perfectly illustrated how cold front timing moves deer. If this front moved through at the same time on November 6th, things would have been much different. Right now mature bucks are not on their feet for long, so today's movement was short. If this happened on Nov 6, they would be on their feet for quiet awhile looking for a hot doe. Updates to the report will happen more frequently now that it is closer to the rut.

18 September 2021
First scrape of the year. Soybeans are yellowing or leafless already and some corn is being picked. Summer pattern might last until opening day, but doubtful with the temp drop this week.
