A lot of the Orange Army gave up after Monday. I guess the new Orange Army is afraid of snow, the old Orange Army loved snow and cold weather. Prolonged cold and a bigger drop in temps on the way, hope your plots are good and your yellow gold container is full!

On the downhill side now. Mature bucks are still on the prowl, hunt between doe groups. It is not over yet! On side note, if you don't know where the oaks are on neighboring properties, now is the time to figure it out for next year. The trees you see that are still holding their leafs are oak trees. That can be very helpful next year. Good luck!

It has peaked! Going to be a bit harder for him to find a girl now. Young bucks are whipped from chasing does now, they can be found at feeders again. Mature bucks will swing by a feeder when they are near one, but their mission is still finding the next hot doe. Same rules apply, sit in a tree on a travel corridor. This week looks a lot like big buck killing weather (cloudy and dreary)! Good luck!

It's still going strong! This means it can be extremely boring still, until it's not. Since I already punched my buck tag, I have been to Walmart a few times in the morning. Pro tip for all the out of state guys (especially Vermont, PA, and Jersey), the bucks are not at Walmart at 10 AM! You also do not need to wear your hunting clothes inside. We are right around peak breeding, meaning they will need to start looking hard again for a receptive doe after that. Stay in the stand!

If you are not in an EHD hit area, you are going to have major ups and downs this week. Every area is going to have a doe that is ready. Meaning if you are near her you could see a lot of chasing. If you are not near her, you may be pretty bored because the other girls are laying low after being chased and checked by every buck in the area. Remember, every buck in your area might be locked down with that one doe or they might be on a walk about. This is the time of year when sitting in the tree is paying your dues, it will happen but when? Good luck!

This is the time you have been waiting for! Get out there it is happening! Had a client talk about too many does on the property and how there is less rut activity. They must be watching to many professional youtubers or facebookers (I said professional youtubers and facebookers NOT professional hunters). Yes there is less chance of getting a shot at your target, BUT there is less chance of a neighbor killing your target too. I would rather he be locked down, find another girlfriend directly after the last girlfriend and be locked down again, than let billybob have a chance at gut shooting him (happens WAY more than you think, hence why thermal drone ads are everywhere now). This applies to dang near everyone hunting in Ohio, very few people have 1200 or more acres of exclusive hunting rights. 1200 is the least amount of acres you need to keep him on only your property. I have three clients that are close to this amount and they still have neighbors take out up and coming bucks. Before I go on any more rants, the take away is get in a tree whenever you can right now, it is happening and stay off your phone!

First Big Buck of the year down! Gorging on acorns then headed to food plot to get something green. Even though last year and this year have been bad droughts, oaks are still dropping acorns! This will most likely be the last week of hunting food sources, good luck!

It's beginning to look a lot like deer season! The next two afternoons look promising. This weekend will have an influx of hunters out. Make sure you are not helping the neighbors kill the buck you are after-ensure your ingress and egress to and from the stand won't bump him to the neighbors.
